The purpose of this thread is to organize FACTS about the 951's engine management, installing an aftermarket EMS, and eventually detail specific steps needed to control fuel, spark, boost, and more with a megasquirt EMS. A lot of this info has already been gathered in other places, but those sites are either littered with troll posts/misinformation or have turned to electronic dust by now.

I'd rank my EMS knowledge level somewhere between the "just enough to be dangerous" and "might actually get things right occasionally" points on the scale. I've built 3 megasquirt boards and successfully started/drove 4 different standalone projects from 3 different manufacturers to this point, although all had plenty of "experience points" earned along the way and none were particularly well sorted. The goal is for a well sorted system to show up on my 951 by the time I'm ready to twist the key. Still, let it be known that I definitely don't qualify as an expert and I can't guarantee all the info I'll post is accurate or correct.

This first post will get the stock 951 EMS info started.

Bosch Motronic
  • barn door AFM
  • KLR module
    • detect knock
    • control boost
    • knock-based timing retard feedback to DME
  • 132 "speed" teeth per engine rotation
  • 1 "reference" tooth timed 58.5 degrees BTDC #1 cyl
  • batch fire (all 4 at once)
  • cap/rotor ignition

Not an exhaustive list, but that will get things started. I'll continue to update this thread with more info sifted out of the various forums. Eventually I'm hoping to have a complete step by step procedure mapped out for the MS + 951 DIY project.

I'll back this info up on my own website should this one ever go down for some reason.
